Scaling Citywide Inclusive Sanitation in South Asia

Redefining the urban sanitation agenda in South Asia, this initiative led the foundational shift from basic infrastructure to holistic, sustainable service delivery. By forging critical alliances and building government capacity, it successfully embedded Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) and Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) into national policies and programs across India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

Concluding 13 years of service at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

“It has been a distinct pleasure to share my experiences and the collective achievements that have elevated the global sanitation agenda to new heights. Thank you all.”

His final public address for the Foundation was as a keynote speaker at the International Water Association’s (IWA) Water Development Congress, where his resounding message was that city-level demonstration and strong government engagement remain the most powerful catalysts for national sanitation transformation.

In Service to Home

Although he could not work on the frontlines during Nepal’s major emergencies, he supported the people and organizations who could. Through Nepal Rising, he contributed to relief efforts during the earthquake, the COVID-19 crisis, and subsequent disasters, helping strengthen community-led responses when they were needed most.

In 2023, he received the Bill Gates Sr. Award and directed USD 100,000 charitable amount toward long-term initiatives in Nepal. His contributions supported Teach For Nepal in improving public schools, Dhulikhel Hospital in organizing cataract surgery camps for underserved communities, and the Karmayog Foundation in disaster relief following the 2024 floods and in expanding recycled-playground projects. His other donations also include USD 20,000 to Kathmandu Institute of Child Health (KIOCH).

Across each effort, his approach has remained the same: enabling trusted local institutions to serve communities with dignity, continuity, and care.

Translating Recognition
to Local Impact

After being named the recipient of the Bill Gates Sr. Award, the associated charitable fund was dedicated entirely to high-impact community work in Nepal. This funding directly supported essential educational programs, disaster relief efforts, and the development of local community spaces.
